Purple sweet potato
During the colder days in Asia, we often see street hawkers pushing carts selling either roasted chestnuts or baked sweet potatoes. Simply follow the tell-tale sweet smoky scent, and you’ll have a piping-hot winter treat to warm you up!
Aside from the typical yellow sweet potato, the new kid on the block is the purple sweet potato – featuring a sweet earthy taste wrapped in a beautiful purple package!
Although the most famous variant is the Okinawan purple sweet potato, this cultivate is in fact native to South America! Originally introduced to China and Southeast Asia in the 15th Century, it spread to Okinawa around a century later.
Nowadays it’s grown not only in Japan, but also in East Asia, Hawaii and back home in South America.

Better for you!
Thanks to its attractive colour and sweet taste, purple sweet potato has gone beyond just a staple crop – it’s now a star in both desserts and bubble tea. There’s no need to feel guilty after enjoying a slice of purple goodness, however: This crop is packed with various important nutrients!
This crop is a great source of anti-oxidants, in particular anthocyanins which lend the plant its iconic colour. It’s also a rich source of various vitamins, one medium-size potato contains nearly two times the daily value for Vitamin A, and almost 40% the daily value for Vitamin C!
Moreover, the plant also contains various minerals (in particular Potassium and Zinc) and dietary fibre. With all those health benefits, it’s no wonder why it’s such an important crop!

What about Walnuts?
The other star of our drink is walnut! With a crunchy texture and an additicting roasted aroma, grounded walnuts transform the drink into a satisfying meal.
Naturally the nut also has its own share of health benefits!
The Ancient Chinese believed in “Like Nourishes Like”, so the brain-shaped walnut was said to boost your brainpower. While this is only superstition, what *is* true is that the antioxidants it contains may help reduce oxidative stress.
Walnuts are also a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids, a type of essential fat with a range of health benefits, including preventing heart diseases, reducing inflammation and more.
