Have you heard of Pancake Day? When the day draws near, many people in the UK and other parts of the world celebrate by making delicious, crepe-like pancakes. Read on to learn more about this unique festival!
Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, is a traditional holiday celebrated mainly in the UK, Ireland, and some other countries around the world. It is a time for people to indulge in delicious pancakes: Traditionally it’s a way to use up rich ingredients such as sugar, butter, and eggs before the start of the Lent season.
What is Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the Lent season, a festival dating back to medieval times. It’s a season of fasting and penance that leads up to Easter.
To prepare for the Lent season, people traditionally confess their sins to seek forgiveness. It’s also the last day for people to gorge in delicious, sweet/fatty foods before fasting begins.
In many countries, it is still time for people to reflect on their lives and ask for forgiveness from those they may have wronged.
What do you do on Shrove Tueday?
The highlight of Shrove Tuesday is, of course, eating pancakes! Many people enjoy making their own pancakes at home, or heading out to a local restaurant to dig into this tasty treat.
Other popular activities on Shrove Tuesday include church services, parades, and carnivals.
What kind of pancakes?
Unlike the fluffy, American-style pancakes you’re used to, traditional English pancake is very thin, similar to French crepes. It’s often served immediately with toppings such as golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar.
Nowadays there are many different ways to enjoy pancakes, from simple and classic to creative and unique.
Some popular toppings include syrups, fruits, chocolate chips, nuts, and whipped cream.
Other traditional Shrove Tuesday foods include fritters, doughnuts, and waffles!
